Choose what you need to do, fill in your ranges, and get a formula that is ready to paste — with the exact syntax, locked references and a plain-English explanation.
The short answer
An Excel formula generator builds a working formula from the task you choose and the ranges you supply. Pick SUMIF, SUMIFS, COUNTIF, IF, IFERROR, TEXTJOIN, INDEX MATCH or percentage change, enter your cells, and copy a validated formula with an explanation.
1. What do you need to do?
2. Fill in your cells
3. Copy your formula
Validate it →=SUMIF($B$2:$B$500,"North",$D$2:$D$500)SUMIF always puts the criteria range first — a common source of wrong totals.
Adds the values in D2:D500 only where B2:B500 matches "North".
Paste into the formula bar and press Enter. If Excel adds @ or changes the separators, your locale uses semicolons instead of commas.
Looking for VLOOKUP or XLOOKUP instead?
Open lookup generatorYes. Choose the SUMIF or SUMIFS pattern, enter the criteria range, the condition and the sum range, and the generator produces a correctly ordered formula with absolute references.
By default it locks ranges with $ so the formula copies down safely. You can switch locking off when you want relative references.
For standard formulas it is faster and more predictable: the output is built from Excel's real argument order, not generated prose. It also validates the result and explains each argument. For unusual logic, the formula explainer can help you audit whatever you build.
The core patterns (SUMIF, SUMIFS, COUNTIF, IF, IFERROR, INDEX MATCH, TEXTJOIN) work in Excel 2019 and Microsoft 365. Dynamic-array patterns are labelled and need Microsoft 365 or Excel 2021.
