Pick the question you are actually asking — 15% of a number, the change from last month, or one product's share of sales — and get the answer plus the formula that reproduces it.
The short answer
An Excel percentage calculator turns the question into the right formula: =A2*B2% for a percentage of a number, =(B2-A2)/A2 for percent change, =A2/B2 for a share of a total, and =A2*(1+B2%) for an increase. The result is formatted as a percentage, and percentage points are kept separate from percent change.
Answer
36
Decimal form
36
Remainder
204
=A2*B2%Format the result as Currency, Number or General — not Percentage — or Excel will multiply it by 100 for display.
B2% converts 15% to 0.15 and multiplies it by 240. If your percentage is stored as a whole number (15 rather than 0.15), the formula is =A2*B2/100.
Put the first value in A2 and the second in B2, then replace the references above.
Percentage formulas in Excel
| Question | Formula |
|---|---|
| What is 15% of 240? | =240*15% → 36 |
| What percent is 45 of 180? | =45/180 → 25% |
| What is the change from 200 to 250? | =(250-200)/200 → 25% |
| Increase 240 by 15% | =240*(1+15%) → 276 |
| Decrease 240 by 15% | =240*(1-15%) → 204 |
| Each row's share of a column total | =A2/SUM($A$2:$A$10) |
Formatting the cell as Percentage is the last step — the formula itself should stay a plain division.
Check the formulaDivide the part by the whole: =A2/B2, then format the cell as Percentage (Ctrl+Shift+%). If you need a plain number, multiply by 100 or use =A2/B2*100. For 45 out of 60, =45/60 returns 75%.
Moving from 5% to 6% is an increase of 1 percentage point but a 20% change, because (6−5)/5 = 0.20. Use percentage points when comparing two percentages directly, and percent change when comparing the size of the move.
The cell is formatted as General or Number. Select it and press Ctrl+Shift+% (Cmd+Shift+% on Mac), or use Format Cells → Percentage. The underlying value stays 0.15; only the display changes.
Divide each value by an absolute total: =A2/SUM($A$2:$A$10). The dollar signs lock the total range so the formula copies down correctly. Format the result as a percentage.
